You have narrowed down your gift ideas and have decided to give jewellery. But with so much choice on the high street where do you start? Make sense of the choices out there with our short guide.

A Personal Choice

One of the biggest challenges when shopping for jewellery is choosing something that your loved one will like as much as you do. Jewellery is extremely personal; what one person adores, another person will feel indifferent about.

The simplest way to avoid disappointment is to play detective and get some clues before you hit the shops. A good start is to examine their current collection. Look at which pieces they wear. Do they have a passion for rings? If so, they might really appreciate a new gem for their collection. Do they never wear earrings? If that is the case then steer clear of buying them diamond studs or hoops.

Secondly, cast your mind back to previous conversations. Have they ever mentioned a particular jewellers that they aspire to own a piece from? If they have, be thankful. They have made the whole process very easy for you. Head straight to that shop and pick something up which fits your budget.

Statement v Subtle

We have already mentioned the need to pay close attention to the style of the person you are buying for. This is essential. Everyone has different tastes and nowhere is this reflected more than in the type of jewellery they choose to wear.

To help you along you should know that there are roughly two different types of jewellery wearers: those who go for strong, statement pieces and those who prefer the more delicate and subtle classics.

The latter can be pleased with the more traditional items; necklaces, rings, bracelets and earrings made with silver or gold and tastefully adorned with pearls or precious stones are top picks. For these types, you can probably get away with heading to your local high street and picking out something you think might suit them.

Those fans of statement pieces seek out the unusual, in alternative materials. In that case, so should you. This type of person will appreciate a bespoke item or something from a small, up-and-coming jeweller. Contemporary and unique are the keywords so head to one-off boutiques rather than national high street chains.

Budget Busting

Jewellery is not the cheapest gift idea. Even if you steer clear of the prestigious jewellery houses that line the world’s most exclusive shopping streets, you can still find that it’s all too easy to go outside the budget.

If you are watching the pennies, avoid selecting anything with diamonds or other premium priced stones. Go for the cheaper options which although more affordable, still get the pulses rising! Emeralds and rubies are cheaper than diamonds but have a certain bling factor that cannot fail to impress. Similarly silver is cheaper than gold but can still look very special.

Size Matters

Imagine it: you give the perfect ring to the perfect girl and as she tries it on it becomes apparent that it is not going to fit. It’s not the end of the world but it is definitely a disappointment.

Avoid the hassle and inconvenience altogether and get it right first time. Before you hit the shops, do some sneaky research. Remove a ring or bracelet from their collection and take it with you so that the jeweller can make a judgement on their size. Be careful to return the item back where you found it so not to raise any suspicions!
